DOE Public Bus Tour of Oak Ridge

The Department of Energy (DOE) offers a 3 ½ hour bus tour of three (3) key sites in Oak Ridge that harken back to this federal agency’s role in the 1940s Manhattan Project. Those sites are:

1) K-25 History Center Tour – visitors learn about the gaseous diffusion process that enriched uranium (later sent to Y-12 for further enrichment) to power the first atomic bomb;

2) Oak Ridge National Laboratories Center for Computational Sciences for an introduction to the world’s fastest super computer, Frontier. What that means? How fast is fast and why is matter and how the facility continues to lead the way into the future and

3) New Hope Visitor Center (displays about the Manhattan Project, the Cold War, and Y-12 missions).

After the bus tour, guests will enjoy a Honey Baked Ham catered box luncheon at the AMSE.  Following lunch, guests may peruse the American Science Museum of Energy (ASME) and return by private vehicle to the K-25 Museum for a more leisurely self-guided tour until closing time at 5:00pm, since both of these museums are included in the bus tour ticket price.

DOE has strict conditions for attending this tour: each attendee must be a US citizen, must have a valid US driver’s license, and must agree to certain rules which members will be made available of at sign-up.

This event is open to RBWC members and spouses/partners with very limited seating available. For additional information, please contact Kim Wood at kimrenewood@gmail.com or 704-989-0662.
